Frequently Asked Questions
What is electrolysis?
The science of electrology has been around for over 100 years. It all began back in 1875 when an ophthalmologist first used electric current to success- fully remove inverted eyelashes on a patient. Although greatly refined, elect- rolysis remains the only method of permanent hair removal proven safe and effective.
Is Electrolysis safe?
When performed by a competent professional electrolysis is safe. Since electrolysis has been in existence for over 100 years, it has been evaluated for long-term safety and known to have no adverse effects on the client’s skin and health. The only concern is that it may become habit forming. Once you complete one area you’ll want to start another!
What about for women of color?
At Dawn Electrolysis, we have treated many women of color. Be assured that you will have no skin discoloration and your skin texture and tone will only improve after electrolysis.
How do I qualify an electrologist?
Unfortunately, there are no regulatory boards for electrologists or laser technicians in the State of New York. Your decision should not be based on price or convenience. If you do not have a friend or physician to refer you to a qualified electrologist, keep these tips in mind:
- The electrologist’s office should be clean. An unclean office is a reflection of the electrologist’s general hygiene.
- Sterile disposable or individual probes should be used. Tweezers should be sterilized and the electrologist should wear disposable gloves.
- During treatment, after the current is applied the hair should slide out without any resistance. If you feel any pulling the electrologist is just tweezing.
- Membership in an electrolysis association does not guarantee the skill of the electrologist however; it does show she/he is interested in keeping up to date with the latest information in her/his field.
Does electrolysis hurt?
The sensation will vary depending on the area being treated and the sensitivity of the individual. While some may find electrolysis uncomfortable, there are others who can actually sleep through a session. With the advent of new anesthetic creams, even the most sensitive client can easily tolerate treatment.
How long does it take?
Due to the cyclical nature of hair growth (all hair is not present on the surface of the skin at the same time), electrolysis requires a series of treatments over a period of time. The number and frequency of treatments will vary with each individual depending on their hair and skin type and previous use of temporary removal methods. During your initial consultation we will take these factors into consideration and plan a treatment course tailored to your individual circumstances. With consistency you should start seeing improvement within approximately 90 days and your appointments will become less frequent and shorter in duration. It is important to adhere to your schedule for optimum results.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Electrolysis can safely be performed on all areas of the body with the exception of inside of the ears and nose. The most common areas include the chin, neck, upper and lower lip, eyebrows, hairline, sideburns, breasts, abdomen, arms, underarms, bikini line , legs and back.
How will electrolysis affect my skin?
Only the highest quality insulated probes are used for your comfort and protection. These probes concentrate the electrical energy at the base of the hair follicle, while protecting the upper layers of the skin and eliminating any chance of scarring. There may be a slight redness and/or swelling immediately after treatment which usually disappears within a few hours. A medicated cover up lotion will be applied afterward allowing you to feel comfortable with your appearance when you leave the office. When your treatment course is complete your skin will have a smoother appearance, free of irritation associated with hair and its removal (ingrown hairs, razor bumps, etc.).
Does Electrolysis work for everyone?
Electrolysis is rarely ineffective. When it is, it is usually due to a medical condition such as a severe hormonal imbalance, polycystic ovaries, or when medications which cause hair growth as a side effect are taken on a regular basis. A complete medical history will be taken during your initial consultation to determine whether or not you are a candidate for electrolysis.
